Skype to Fix Wormable Bug in Mac Software

Skype plans to push out an important update to its Skype for Mac software next week that will fix a big that could be leveraged by hackers looking to build a self-copying worm program.

Details of the flaw haven't been made public, so it's unlikely that anyone is going to write a worm any time soon. But the bug is serious, according to Gordon Maddern, the Australian security researcher who reported the issue to Skype.

"The long and the short of it is that an attacker needs only to send a victim a message and they can gain remote control of the victims Mac," Maddern wrote in a blog post. "It is extremely wormable and dangerous."

According to Skype, any attack that exploited it would involve sending a maliciously crafted message to someone on the attacker's Skype Contact List. The flaw does not affect Windows or Linux users, Skype Chief Information Security Officer Adrian Asher wrote in a blog post on the issue.

Skype will push out an update to its Skype for Mac software early next week, which means that all Mac OS users should be offered the fix within days.

But security-conscious people can already download a "hotfix" that Skype released on April 14. However, to date, Skype hasn't pushed this patch out to its users. Because "there were no reports of this vulnerability being exploited in the wild, we did not prompt our users to install this update," Asher said.

Mac users who want the fix now can click on Skype --> Check for Updates, or they can download the latest update from Skype's website. Otherwise they'll be prompted to upload the fix early next week.

Apple's website hints at iWork '11

A small misstep by Apple in a MacBook Air image hints at the rumored iWork 11 suite. Located directly above the iPhoto image in the right sidebar is a reference to the rumored productivity suite. Rumors coming fast and furious last year pointed to a January launch of the iWork 11 applications along with the Mac App Store. While the OS X App Store debuted on time, the suite of applications which include Pages '11, Numbers '11 and Keynote '11 did not materialize.



The primary feature which is likely to be of the most use in iWork ’11 is the use of Lion’s AutoSave and Versions features.  As its name suggests, Versions records the evolution of a document as you create it’.  Therefore, if you wish to revert to an earlier version, Lion brings up a Time-Machine like screen to allow you to select which one you want.  Similarly, if you shut down an application, the AutoSave and Resume feature will automatically reopen where you left off.  It is likely that this will somehow be expanded and tightly integrated within iWork ’11.


The second feature relates to the AirDrop and sharing features.  AirDrop allows you to share files with anyone around you wirelessly, something that would be incredibly useful in iWork ’11.  In addition, recent rumors are suggesting that Apple will be relaunching MobileMe this year with a much greater emphasis on cloud storage and sharing.  It is likely that this will be a big component in iWork ’11 and another reason why we haven’t seen it up until now. Apple has already dipped into this with the iWork.com beta but we may see a lot more functionality when it finally launches.

Is iCloud the next MobileMe

News this morning is that Sweden - based Xcerion just sold its iCloud.com domain for 4.5 million and that Apple might be the buyer. Xcerion had previously sold a cloud-based storage service called iCloud, but it's been rebranded as CloudMe after the sale of the iCloud.com domain.


Speculation abounds that Apple is nearing the launch of a cloud-based music service that would allow people to store their music libraries on the Web for access anywhere they can connect to the Internet. Last month, Amazon.com launched its own digital music locker, allowing folks to store their tracks on the Web. The Amazon service also lets people store video and e-books. However, the service launched without licensing content from record labels, potentially putting it at a disadvantage when compared with services that have licensed content and can thus deliver a more well-rounded, feature-rich offering.

Sync Google Calendar with iCal

If you use Google Calendar, why not sync it to your Mac? Setting this up is very simple:

• Launch iCal
• Open iCal Preferences from the iCal menu
• Click the Accounts button
• Click on the + icon in the lower left corner of the window to add an account
• Enter your Google credentials and click on Create

You can keep the import settings on Automatic, although setting to Google seems to speed up the first time the calendars are synced. iCal will contact Google for you and grab all the information, there’s nothing else to do.

Now you can add events from iCal and the Mail app on your Mac, or Gmail and Google Calendar from anywhere else, and you’ll always have the same date and event information regardless of where or what you’re checking your calendar from. Don’t forget that you can add Google Calendar support to your iPhone or iPad too.
